R. (cf. 5) May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Blessed are you who fear the LORD,
who walk in his ways!
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;
blessed shall you be, and favored.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
in the recesses of your home;
your children like olive plants
around your table.

Behold, thus is the man blessed
who fears the LORD.
The LORD bless you from Zion:
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.

May you see your children's children.
Peace be upon Israel!

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Edify

To build up. In the Christian context it means to strengthen
someone, or be strengthened, in relationship to God, the Christian
walk, and holiness. As Christians, we are to "let all things be
done for edification" (1 Cor. 14:26). We are edified by the Word of
God (Acts 20:32) and by love (1 Cor. 8:1). (See also Rom. 14:19;
Eph. 4:29 and 1 Cor. 3:1-4; James 4:1-6).

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- October 6. St. Bruno [1032-1101]

Bruno was brought up at Reims in Eastern France and, as a priest,
later taught at the Cathedral school there. He decided to become a
hermit (possibly as a result of witnessing the deplorable personal
behaviour of the Archbishop, who had to be deposed), and after an
unsuccessful start near Cologne moved down to the French Alps near
Grenoble where the Bishop gave him, and six followers, a plot of
land which was to be the origin of the first Charterhouse
(Chartreuse), and of the Carthusian Order named after it. The
Carthusians developed a life of extreme simplicity, based on the
early models of hermit life in Egypt rather than on the Rule of St.
Benedict, then dominant in Europe. The design of their buildings,
with individual cells built around a Church, rather than within a
large communal building emphasises the character of their spiritual
life. Bruno later made another foundation in Southern Italy where
he died in 1101. Given the strict nature of their rule, there have
never been many Carthusians; there is only one house in England at
Parkminster in West Sussex.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Zen Catholicism

This book is a fairly dense but well written exploration of how Zen
might help Catholics "to realize more fully their own spiritual
inheritance." Graham's take on Zen in relation to Catholicism is
theologically astute and experientially grounded.

Graham, who was a Benedictine monk, notes that he is not inviting
readers "to embark on a daring theological adventure" (the book
received an ecclesiastical imprimatur). Rather, he is inviting
readers "to look into [their] own nature and that of the Church"
and to consider Graham's suggestion that, at their existential
depths, Zen and Catholicism share the same basic message.

This book was first published in 1963, but I think it's still one
of the best books relating Buddhism and Christianity.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

All About Buddhism
- http://www.religioustolerance.org/buddhism.htm

In light of the book recommendation for this week, I thought it
would be helpful to some if the basics of Buddhism were better
understood. Please note that I do not consider Buddhism and
Christianity to be two different paths to the same experience.
It's clear that they are different in many fundamental ways. That
doesn't men the two are diametrically opposed, however. As the
book on Zen Catholicism cited above makes clear, there are many
ways in which Zen Buddhism can help Christians to come to deeper
inner freedom and, hence, openness to the God proclaimed in
Christianity.

This website provides a number of helpful links. Enjoy!

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is too farfrom
the stage. He whispers to the usher, "This is a mystery, and I have
to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I'll give
you a handsome tip."

The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the
usher a quarter. Yep. 25 cents.

The usher looks at the quarter in his hand, leans over and
whispers, "The wife did it."
