Sunday: Dt 4:1-2, 6-8; Ps 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5; Jas 1:17-18,

R. (1a)One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice;
who thinks the truth in his heart
and slanders not with his tongue.

Who harms not his fellow man,
nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
by whom the reprobate is despised,
while he honors those who fear the LORD.

Who lends not his money at usury
and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
shall never be disturbed.

by Philip St. Romain, D. Min.

* How has the concept of codependency affected our views of
love and selfless giving?
* Does the Church teach codependency in the name of Christian
love?
* What does Christian spirituality have to contribute unto

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Dispensation, dispensationalism

In the Scofield Reference Bible a dispensation is "a period of time
during which man is tested in respect of obedience to some specific
revelation of the will of God" Dispensationalism says that God uses
different means of administering His will and grace to His people.
These different means coincide with different periods of time.
Scofield says there are seven dispensations: of innocence, of
conscience, of civil government, of promise, of law, of grace, and
of the kingdom. Dispensationalists interpret the scriptures in
light of these (or other perceived) dispensations.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- August 31st. St. Aidan.

Born in the late 6th century, he was a monk of the island of lone
in Scotland, but came to Northumbria in 635 when the king, Oswald,
who had himself become a Christian on lone, asked for a missioner
to be sent. Aidan replaced an anonymous harsh and demanding monk,
who said the English were unteachable and returned home. Aidan's
base was the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), near the royal
palace at Bamburgh, and from here he took the Gospel to
Northumberland, leaving what we now call Yorkshire to St. Paulinus.
Oswald's successor, Oswin, gave him a horse, which he promptly gave
away in accordance with his stress on personal poverty. Every Lent,
Aidan moved to one of the Farne Islands off the Northumberland
coast for a season of penitential prayer. He died in 651 and was
buried on Lindisfarne; the island was later sacked by the Vikings
and Aidan's memory was eclipsed by that of St. Cuthbert, until
revived by monks in far-away Glastonbury. The Venerable Bede is the
sole source of information about Aidan; he highly approved of his
qualities (possibly in contrast to some of the hierarchs of his own
time). In general, this gentle and selfless missioner has not
received the attention he deserves, and there is only one ancient
church dedication to him in the whole of England.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Yearnings, Embracing the Sacred Messiness of Life," by Irwin
Kula. Hyperion, 2006.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1401309135/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Written by an 8th generation rabbi, this book presents ways to
embrace the day to day living often hidden in the Old Testament. He
answers questions readers would never think of asking; he writes of
mistakes, passions and doubts and other topics.

This author is passionate about his subject and he believes
everyone can become all one wants to be. His chapters are rooted
in the Jewish tradition, of which he is knowledgeable and
conversant. Kula writes from his heart, and shares his own sorrows
and joys in interesting ways. Even though Kula writes from a Jewish
perspective, his book speaks to persons of any religious
denomination or those with no affiliation.

What is truth? Who is God? What does it mean to love God and
humanity and all of creation? Is what God gives for me today
sufficient? Kula speaks to those in sorrow, to those suffering in a
bad marriage, to those who just lost a child or a livelihood. He
addresses the married, the single, those eager for intimacy and
pleasure.

Kula's seven chapters deal with yearnings for truth, meaning, the
Way, love, create, happiness, and transcendence. In one favorite
chapter he deals with "Dayenu", meaning "it's enough for us". In
this chapter he speaks eloquently on the importance of gratitude
for even the least of a day's blessings. And even if his
father-in-law was dying of cancer on the day of his granddaughter's
wedding, it "was enough" that he did DANCE on that day. Nothing
else mattered. The memory of that dance was sufficient and
emphasized God's bountifulness.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- The Reverend and the golf game...

The Reverend Francis Norton woke up Sunday morning and realizing it
was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided
he just had to play golf.

So... he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and
convinced him to say Mass for him that day. As soon as the
Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed out of town to
a golf course about forty miles away. This way he knew he wouldn't
accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish.

Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday
morning and everyone else was in church!

At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while
looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "You're not going to
let him get away with this, are you?"

The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not." Just then Father
Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping
just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. It WAS A 420
YARD HOLE IN ONE! St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord
and asked, "Why did you let him do that?"

The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?"
