6:43-49
Sunday: Is 50:5-9a; Ps 116:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9; Jas
2:14-18; Mk 8:27-35

R. (9)I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

I love the LORD because he has heard
my voice in supplication,
Because he has inclined his ear to me
the day I called.

The cords of death encompassed me;
the snares of the netherworld seized upon me;
I fell into distress and sorrow,
And I called upon the name of the LORD,
"O LORD, save my life!"

Gracious is the LORD and just;
yes, our God is merciful.
The LORD keeps the little ones;
I was brought low, and he saved me.

For he has freed my soul from death,
my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
I shall walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Doctrine

A set of accepted beliefs held by a group. In religion, it is the
set of true beliefs that define the parameters of that belief
system. Hence, there is true doctrine and false doctrine relative
to each belief set. In Christianity, for example, a true biblical
doctrine is that there is only one God in all existence (Isaiah
43:10; 44:6,8). A false doctrine is that there is more than one God
in all existence.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- September 15th. St. Catherine of Genoa.

She was born of a noble family near the historic North Italian port
of Genoa in 1447 and married off at 16 to a husband who turned out
to be mean, irascible, lecherous, unfaithful, and usually absent
from home. Nevertheless her persistent fidelity to him, and
devotion to her faith, eventually achieved a change of heart in him
(a process recorded in the life of several female saints towards
their husbands, but never, it seems, the other way round). In 1473
they moved to a humble abode and jointly devoted themselves to the
sick; Catherine became matron of a hospital, putting her health at
risk in a plague in 1493, and again in 1496, one year before her
husband died. After his death, she continued her spiritual quest
but without becoming a Tertiary of one of the religious orders, as
would have been customary at the time. A contemplative and
visionary, she shared her experiences with others through her
writings (on Purgatory, and on the soul and the body). She died in
1510 and was canonised in 1740.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Care of Creation, a Franciscan spirituality of the earth," by Ilia
Delio, Keith Douglas Warner, and Pamela Wood. St. Anthony Messenger
Press, 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0867168382/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

This is a book that should have been written and proclaimed years
ago for it provides the wisdom that the world needs. The care of
creation is no longer a religious issue, but one that comes
directly from St. Francis of Assisi. Good science is combined with
solid theology, and a sound explanation of the relationship of
faith and creation makes this a very readable and a book for today.
The authors provide a great service to earth and to all creation.
They urge readers to follow the footsteps of Jesus as they help
renew the earth.

The book begins with an admonition that the earth and all its
resources are in crisis and the response will take the efforts of
all the human community. All human creatures must be treated as
valuable, useful, but not to be taken for granted. Kinship with the
earth is a fundamental duty, lest we actually "lose the earth."

According to Duns Scotus, God created the earth with the
Incarnation in mind, and did not see the Incarnation just a
necessity in the sense of saving humanity from sin. Every creature
is a work of art, and must be honored as such, a true gift from the
Trinity, a sign of the divine Wisdom. At the heart of this book is
a profound conviction that responding to the Incarnation, the Word
made flesh, commits humanity to the interrelated world of flesh, to
the biological community of the earth.

The book ends with a valuable chapter on how to calculate one's own
individual carbon emissions. Provided are also ways of reflective
prayer as well as guided actions to "save the universe."

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Before texting . . .

A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway.
Glancing at the driver, he was astounded to see that the woman
behind the wheel was knitting!

Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren,
the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn, and
yelled, PULLOVER!"

"NO," the woman yelled back, "IT'S A SCARF!"
