R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.
Glorify the LORD with me,
let us together extol his name.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy,
and your faces may not blush with shame.

and from all his distress he saved him.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Didache
From the Greek "didoskolos" meaning "teacher." The Didache
(pronounced did-a-kay). It was possibly written around 65-80 A.D.
and is supposed to be what the twelve apostles taught to the
Gentiles concerning life and death, church order, fasting, baptism,
prayer, etc. There is debate as to its authenticity. The work is
cited by Eusebius who lived from 260-341 and Athanasius (293-373).
The Didache is not inspired, but is valuable as an early church
document.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- August 19th. St. John Eudes.
He was born in Normandy in 1601 and educated in Caen. In 1623 he
joined the French Oratory fathers; these were an offshoot of the
Oratorians founded by St. Philip Neri, though enjoying a different
constitution under Cardinal Berulle. He distinguished himself
particularly as a missionary preacher. In 1643 he founded the
Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the 'Eudist' fathers), whose
primary purpose was to raise the standards of priestly education in
seminaries. The Order's roots were in his native Normandy,
Coutances, Rouen and Lisieux, though there were later foundations
much further afield. He developed the doctrine of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, promoted at that time by the visionary St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque (1647-90), and gave this devotion a strong theological and
biblical basis. He also founded refuges to rehabilitate
prostitutes, and for this purpose founded the Order of the Sisters
of Our Lady of Charity, who are among us in this parish today. He
died in 1680 and was canonised in 1925.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Premeditiated Mercy, a Spirituality of Reconciliation," by Father
Joseph Nassal. Forest of Peace, 2000.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0939516497/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Premeditiated is often concerned with a murder, but this book is
not about murder. Instead it implies a deliberate, well-thought-out
willful act to forgive, to be reconciled, to live at peace with
others, even with those who may have betrayed, forsaken, or
threatened another. Nassal offers this book as a way to find the
kind of forgiveness that Jesus offered, even after He was betrayed,
forsaken, and crucified. "Father, forgive them."
A program for ways to forgive is offered according to the patterns
found in the Gospels. Some of these patterns include: finding room
at the table for everyone, finding common ground among various
values, seeing one's shadow, making connections in various
occasions, and helping one to find one's footing in the shadow of
the cross.
Replete with personal stories, Nassal applies the principles of
forgiveness and gives a variety of situations wherein it seems all
but impossible to offer the hand of mercy and love. However, in the
spirit of the Merciful One, all is possible with God. This book is
a manual which offers challenges for the spiritual work that is
needed for every follower of the Master of forgiveness, Jesus the
Christ. This is a book which one may treasure and read frequently,
and encourage others to follow the way of the great Forgiver.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
National Coalition on Health Care
- http://www.nchc.org/
"The National Coalition on Health Care is the nation's largest and
most broadly representative alliance working to improve America's
health care. The Coalition, which was founded in 1990 and is
non-profit and rigorously non-partisan, is comprised of more than
70 organizations, employing or representing about 150 million
Americans. Members are united in the belief that we need and can
achieve better, more affordable health care for all Americans."
- from the website
This seems to be a good resource for statistical information about
health care issues. As this topic is on the front burner now in
the USA, it's good to be well-informed concerning the issues,
costs, options, etc. Consider, for example:
* National surveys show that the primary reason people are
uninsured is the high cost of health insurance coverage.
* Economists have found that rising health care costs correlate
to drops in health insurance coverage.
* A recent study by Harvard University researchers found that
the average out-of-pocket medical debt for those who filed for
bankruptcy was $12,000. The study noted that 68 percent of those
who filed for bankruptcy had health insurance. In addition, the
study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly
the result of medical expenses.9 Every 30 seconds in the United
States someone files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious
health problem.
* A new survey shows that more than 25 percent said that
housing problems resulted from medical debt, including the
inability to make rent or mortgage payments and the development of
bad credit ratings.
* About 1.5 million families lose their homes to foreclosure
every year due to unaffordable medical costs.
* A survey of Iowa consumers found that in order to cope with
rising health insurance costs, 86 percent said they had cut back on
how much they could save, and 44 percent said that they have cut
back on food and heating expenses.
* Retiring elderly couples will need $250,000 in savings just
to pay for the most basic medical coverage. Many experts believe
that this figure is conservative and that $300,000 may be a more
realistic number.
* According to a recent report, the United States has $480
billion in excess spending each year in comparison to Western
European nations that have universal health insurance coverage. The
costs are mainly associated with excess administrative costs and
poorer quality of care.
* The United States spends six times more per capita on the
administration of the health care system than its peer Western
European nations.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Tender Missionaries
Two cannibals meet one day. The first cannibal says, "You know, I
just can't seem to get a tender Missionary. I've baked them, I've
roasted them, I've stewed them, I've tried every sort of marinade.
I just can't seem to get them tender."
The second cannibal asks, "What kind of Missionary do you use?"
The other replied, "You know, the ones that hang out at that place
at the bend of the river. They have those brown cloaks with a rope
around the waist and they're sort of bald on top with a funny ring
of hair on their heads."
"Ah, ah!" the second cannibal replies. "No wonder...those are
friars!"
