WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Ru 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17; Ps 128:1b-2, 3, 4, 5; Mt
23:1-12
Sunday: Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ps 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19,
20-21; Eph 5:21-32; Jn 6:60-69
R. (9a) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.
The LORD has eyes for the just,
and ears for their cry.
The LORD confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
.
When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
Many are the troubles of the just one,
but out of them all the LORD delivers him;
he watches over all his bones;
not one of them shall be broken.

by Philip St. Romain, D. Min.
* How has the concept of codependency affected our views of
love and selfless giving?
* Does the Church teach codependency in the name of Christian
love?
* What does Christian spirituality have to contribute unto
recovery from codependent attitudes and behavior?
These and other issues will be explored in these reflections by Dr.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Disciple
A pupil or follower of a religion, a person, or a movement. As
Christians we are to be disciples of Jesus (Luke 14:26,27). We
follow in the teaching and example of what He said and did. A
disciple is a convert but not all converts are disciples. As
disciples we are to bear our cross daily (Matt. 16:24). This means
to live and die for Him if necessary (Matt. 16:25).
("Disciple" and "discipline" come from the same root word. Hence,
a disciple is one who practices the disciplines of the teacher or
master.)

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- August 23rd. St. Rose of Lima.
Born in 1586 in Lima in Peru, her family fell on hard times through
failure of a mining venture in the Andes. She joined the Third
Order of Dominicans (i.e. lay men and women living a form of the
Dominican Rule) and took a vow of virginity. She determined to
offer her life as a reparation for sin and corruption in society,
inflicting various severe penances on herself and living as a
recluse in a potting shed in her garden. She died in 1617 aged
only 31. No doubt there were complex psychological strands present
in her life, but to our contemporary 'fulfilment culture' the idea
of somebody making themselves a victim for other sinners seems so
weird it is easy to forget that such was the destiny of Jesus
himself. Those who met her were certainly deeply impressed by the
love of God which radiated from her. She was canonised in 1671,
the first native saint of South America.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"When Your Friend Dies," by Harold Ivan Smith. Augsburg, 2002.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0806643544/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This small book in the Hope and Healing Series, a suitable gift for
one who is grieving, affords comfort to a person who has lost a
friend. Some think that the loss of friends is minimal in
comparison with the loss of a family member, but that is not
necessarily true. Even at the Wake and funeral sometimes the family
members can see no reason why the lost one's friend is grieving.
"It is our loss, not his/hers. He/she was ONLY a friend!". Wrong!
The author deals with areas of doubt, confusion, and even agony
which comes when one loses a friend, and he offers ways to come to
understanding and courage for those facing the loss. Even though
some dictionaries may offer three pages of words on friendship,
Smith laments the loss of such words as: friendable, friended,
friendstrong, friendess, and friendstead, as he notes that these
words trigger spell check. (And it was so for me!)
In various ways, Smith warns his readers. "Please do not forget to
say your friend's name in easy conversation. Do not let him/her be
forgotten." He urges his readers to find ways to show gratitude for
all the blessings the two have shared. "Visit the grave. Bring
flowers and yes, your tears. Remember your friend is more alive
than he/she ever was."

JOKE OF THE WEEK
There were two Catholic boys, Timothy Murphy and Antonio Secola,
whose lives
parallel each other in amazing ways. In the same year Timothy was
born in
Ireland, Antonio was born in Italy.
Faithfully they attended parochial School from kindergarten through
their
senior year in high school. They took their vows to enter the
priesthood
early in college, and upon graduation, became priests.
Their careers had come to amaze the world, but it was generally
acknowledged
that Antonio Secola was just a cut above Timothy Murphy in all
respects.
Their rise through the ranks of Bishop, Archbishop and finally
Cardinal was
swift to say the least, and the Catholic world knew that when the
present
Pope died, it would be one of the two who would become the Next
Pope.
In time the Pope did die, and the College of Cardinals went to work.
In less time than anyone had expected, white smoke rose from the
chimney and
the world waited to see whom they had chosen.
The world, Catholic, Protestant and secular, was surprised to learn
that
Timothy Murphy had been elected Pope!
Antonio Secola was beyond surprise. He was devastated, because even
with all
of Timothy's gifts, Antonio knew he was the better qualified.
With gall that shocked the Cardinals, Antonio Secola asked for a
private
session with them in which he candidly asked, "Why Timothy?"
After a long silence, an old Cardinal took pity on the bewildered
man and
rose to reply.
"We knew you were the better of the two, but we just
could not bear the thought of the leader of the Roman Catholic
Church being
called POPE SECOLA.
(Thanks, Carol.)
