WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Lv 25:1, 8-17; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 7-8; Mt 14:1-12
Sunday: Ex 16:2-4, 12-15; Ps 78:3-4, 23-24, 25, 54; Eph
4:17, 20-24; Jn 6:24-35
R. (24b) The Lord gave them bread from heaven.
What we have heard and know,
and what our fathers have declared to us,
We will declare to the generation to come
the glorious deeds of the LORD and his strength
and the wonders that he wrought.
He commanded the skies above
and opened the doors of heaven;
he rained manna upon them for food
and gave them heavenly bread.
Man ate the bread of angels,
food he sent them in abundance.
And he brought them to his holy land,
to the mountains his right hand had won.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Devil
Greek is "diabolos," which means accuser. The greatest of all the
fallen angels. He opposes God and is completely evil. He is often
called Lucifer which is a Latin translation of "light bearer" found
in Isaiah 14:12, and also the accuser of the brethren in (Rev.
12:10), dragon (Rev. 12:9), the devil (Matt. 4:1), the tempter
(Matt. 4:3), the accuser (Rev. 12:10), the prince of demons (Luke
11:15), the ruler of this world (John 12:31), See Isaiah 14:12-15
for a description of the fall of the devil. Upon Jesus' return, the
Devil will be vanquished -- depending on the eschatological
position. His future is the eternal lake of fire.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- August 2nd. St. Eusebius of Vercelli.
Early Christianity was grievously disturbed by the Arian heresy
(after its propagator, Arius), which denied the full divinity of
Christ. The heresy, widespread and popular, was opposed
principally by St. Athanasius and condemned, with only partial
success, by the Council of Nicaea (325). Eusebius, who was born in
Sardinia, and became first bishop of Vercelli, between Turin and
Milan, was a scholar and also a roving ambassador for orthodoxy;
his journeys took him to Alexandria and Antioch. But he also fell
foul of the Emperor Constantius, himself an Arian, and was exiled
to the Near East. He died in 371, and is venerated as a martyr,
though his martyrdom consisted of his sufferings for the faith
rather than the actual manner of his death.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Speaking with Authority," by Mary Catherine Hilkert OP. Paulist
Press, 2008.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809145863/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
With a subtitle of "Catherine of Siena and the voices of women
today" and a foreword by Suzanne Noffke, Hilkert addresses
questions that the present century and the 14th century have in
common. This was/is a church racked with scandalous divisions, a
world torn by war and violence and ravaged by disease. But the
emphasis in this book is on the courageous and compassionate women
who are destined to speak the truth.
Hilkert maintains that Catherine's authority was rooted in her
vocation, her wisdom, and her deep compassion. This makes her a
fitting inspiration for today's women (and men) to take up the
struggle to speak the gospel in the church and in the world. This
struggle is not an easy one, according to the present Pope but "the
failure to listen to their experience of the Spirit could end in
the church's 'opposing God'." Many women may feel that when they
take one step forward, it may be followed by one backwards.
After the introduction, Hilkert gives in chapter one, "The
authority of Vocation". Chapter 2 deals with the "The authority of
Wisdom: Speaking the truth in love", and the final chapter is
entitled "The authority of Compassion."
Hilkert's closing sentences are: "Like many other faithful women
around the globe, this woman handed on wisdom in her living and in
her dying. Her memory remains a source of power and hope, of energy
and challenge, for women, for men, and for the church."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
USCCB Movie Reviews
- http://www.usccb.org/movies/
If you grew up Catholic in the 50s and 60s, you remember that we
were forbidden to see certain movies, and it was a serious sin to
do so. We've come a long ways since those times of threatened
gloom and doom, but the Catholic Church still does provide movie
reviews in an attempt to present moral and spiritual analyses
missing from the conventional rating (G, PG, PG13, R, etc.). Note
the sidebar links: Vatican Top 45 list; Top 10 List (1945-2007);
Current Movies; Movies Coming Soon; even archived reviews and
reviews of TV programs.
If you're interested in watching movies congruent with your values,
this is a good website to consult.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Priest Retirement
A local priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25
years in the parish.
A leading local politician and member of the congregation was
chosen to make the presentation and to give a little speech at the
dinner.
However, he was delayed debating the "bail-out packages," so the
priest decided to say his own few words while they waited:
"I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I
heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The
very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen
a television set and, when questioned by the police, was able to
lie his way out of it. He had also stolen money from his parents,
embezzled from his employer, had an affair with his best friend's
wife, and taken illicit drugs. I was appalled.
"But as the days went on, I learned that my people were not all
like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and
loving people."
Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of
apologies for being late. He immediately began to make the
presentation and said: "I'll never forget the first day our parish
priest arrived. In fact, I had the honor of being the first person
to go to him for confession."
Moral: Never, never, NEVER-EVER be late.
(Thanks, Carol)
