WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Dt 6:4-13; Ps 18:2-3a, 3bc-4, 47 and 51; Mt 17:14-20
Sunday: 1 Kgs 19:4-8; Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9; Eph
4:30--5:2; Jn 6:41-51

R. (9a) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.

Glorify the LORD with me,
Let us together extol his name.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
And delivered me from all my fears.

Look to him that you may be radiant with joy.
And your faces may not blush with shame.
When the afflicted man called out, the LORD heard,
And from all his distress he saved him.

The angel of the LORD encamps
around those who fear him and delivers them.
Taste and see how good the LORD is;
blessed the man who takes refuge in him.

by Philip St. Romain, D. Min.

* How has the concept of codependency affected our views of
love and selfless giving?
* Does the Church teach codependency in the name of Christian
love?
* What does Christian spirituality have to contribute unto
recovery from codependent attitudes and behavior?
These and other issues will be explored in these reflections by Dr.
St. Romain.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Diaspora

Dispersion. Biblically, it refers to the dispersion of the Jews
outside of Israel from the time of the Babylonian Captivity until
now. It has also been applied to the dispersion of Christians after
70 A.D. when Rome sacked Jerusalem and thousands of Christians fled
and dispersed throughout the Mediterranean area.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- August 7th. St. Cajetan.

St. Cajetan was born at Thiene, near Vicenza in Northern Italy, in
1480, and was to found the Theatine Fathers, named after his
birth-place. He gave up the opportunities arising from glittering
success at Padua University and became a priest in 1516. Initially
he gathered clergy and laity into confraternities in the various
places where he served - Rome, Venice, Vicenza - to work for the
poor and sick. He founded the Theatines at Rome in 1523. They were
a pioneer order of the Counter-Reformation, clergy bound by vows to
restore a proper apostolic life, study the Scriptures and Christian
doctrine, devote proper attention to the liturgy, preaching and
pastoral care. This may all seem obvious, but one must remember
that some of the complaints of the Reformation were not empty ones!
St. Cajetan's co-founder was Pietro Caraffa, who later became the
notoriously hard-line Pope Paul IV. This possibly accounted for the
Order not taking wing as much as it might have done, though the
arrival of the Jesuits on the scene tended to put all the smaller
pioneer Orders of the Counter-Reformation into the shade. The
Theatines have never come to England, though an English member of
the Order in Naples became Bishop of St. Asaph in Wales during the
restoration under Queen Mary, from 1555 to 1559. St. Cajetan died
in 1547 and was canonised in 1671.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Preaching God's Compassion," by LeRoy H. Aden and Robert G.
Hughes. Fortress Press 2002
- -
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0800635779/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

These two authors offer a book on what to say and what not to say
or do when interacting with someone who has experienced a terrible
loss. They address losses from deaths in the family, losses of jobs
or important friends, experiences of violence and failure, and
other times of mourning. These authors write from the vantage point
of their own personal losses and give assistance to those who might
come to the same places.

Aden and Hughes acknowledge that the church has various ways of
dealing with individual losses, but they note that some of these
ways only intensify the loss instead of alleviating it. They stress
that a loss is not to be seen as a punishment from God, or the
"reward" from a God who wishes to see humanity suffer. Many causes
of grief come from humanity's bad choices, for example the drunk
driver kills an innocent child in a horrible accident. The diabetic
refuses to take the prescribed medication and dies at an early age.

There are several suggested homilies for occasions of mourning.
There are questions to evaluate the homily or sermon, for example:

a) does it give voice to the human lament?
b) does it assist the learner to face the reality of one aspect of
the suffering?
c) does it make suffering endurable by communicating the love of
God and the Christian community?
d) does it strengthen faith in God and s sense of joy in the midst
of trouble?

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Put your money where your mouth is . . .

The strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he
could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of
making fun of one of the older workmen. After several minutes, the
older worker had had enough.

"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is," he said. "I
will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow
over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back."

"You're on, old man," the young man bragged replied. "Let's see
what you got."

The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles.
Then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right. Get in."
