WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Ex 12:37-42; Ps 136:1 and 23-24, 10-12, 13-15; Mt
12:14-21
Sunday: Jer 23:1-6; Ps 23:1-3, 3-4, 5, 6; Eph 2:13-18;
Mk 6:30-34
R. (1) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me in right paths
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side
with your rod and your staff
that give me courage.
You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.

* Does the Church teach codependency in the name of Christian

* What does Christian spirituality have to contribute unto
recovery from codependent attitudes and behavior?
These and other issues will be explored in these reflections by Dr.
St. Romain.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Decrees, of God
The Decrees of God is His eternal purpose, according to His will,
whereby He has foreordained whatever comes to pass. His Decrees do
not negate the responsibility of people for their sins nor does it
mean that God is responsible for sin. But, it necessarily is true
that God knows all things actual as well as potential, and that
that which exists, exists due to His creative effort. It also
follows that God has eternally known all events that have occurred,
are occurring, and will occur in this creation including the fall,
redemption, glorification, etc. Yet, God is not the one responsible
for the sin in the world but has decreed, by His permission, that
it be allowed to exist. Isaiah 46:9-10 says, "Remember the former
things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God,
and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, 'My
purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good
pleasure."
God's efficacious decrees are those decrees which God has purposed
and determined to occur, i.e., Acts 2:23 "this Man, delivered up by
the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a
cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death." God's
permissive decrees are those decrees where He permits things to
occur such as evil.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- July 22nd. St. Mary Magdalene.
The Scriptures tell us that Jesus freed her of seven devils; she
stood by the Cross at Calvary, went to the tomb on Easter morning
and was addressed by the risen Christ, who commissioned her to
proclaim the Resurrection to the Apostles. She has often been
confused with the Mary who was the sister of Martha, and more
frequently with the sinful woman who anointed Jesus' feet. This has
resulted in her usually being portrayed in art with a pot of
ointment. Tradition has it that she came as an evangelist to France
with Martha and the restored-to-life Lazarus, and her relics are
claimed by the famous Burgundian basilica of Vezelay. Although this
seems to rest on a misidentification, it remains true that her
following has been extremely popular by virtue of her chose
association with the person of Christ.

"Some books, like some people, can be pronounced 'wonderful' after
only a brief encounter; more meetings simply reinforce our initial
judgment. This is that sort of book... a wake-up call we need to
'seize the day' once again by attending to the promptings within
our hearts and allowing the most gentle of companions to accompany
us through it."
--George W. Hunt, S.J., former editor-in-chief of America

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Good news and bad news . . .
A doctor enters into a patient's room and informs the patient that
he has good news and bad news. He then asks the patient which news
he would like to hear.
The patient responds, "Doctor, give me the good news."
The doctor says, "Well we are gonna name a disease after you."
- and another from the clinic around the block -
A baby is just born. It has all of its parts and looks quite
normal. The only problem is, the baby is laughing. Not just
laughing, but laughing hysterically. The doctors and nurses examine
the little tyke, from top to bottom and from front to back in front
of the worried parents. With his tiny fists clenched and tears
rolling down his face, the baby just continues to laugh. One by one
the pediatrician unfolds the tiny fingers checking to see if the
baby's hands are all right. As they open the baby's hand, to their
surprise what do they see, but a birth control pill!
