MESSAGE OF THE DAY

If my work does not come from God, I would consent to its ruin. I
would join our enemies in destroying it if I thought it did not
have God as its author, or that God did not will its progress. But
if God declares Himself its defender, let us fear nothing; no arm
can uproot what God has planted; no hand can snatch away what God
holds in His.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Gn 16:6b-12, 15-16; Ps 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5; Mt 7:21-29

R. (1b) Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever.
Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD,
or proclaim all his praises?

Blessed are they who observe what is right,
who do always what is just.
Remember us, O LORD, as you favor your people.

Visit me with your saving help,
that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,
rejoice in the joy of your people,
and glory with your inheritance.

GOSPEL MEDITATION
from "Praying the Daily Gospels," by Philip St. Romain:

- Matthew 7: 21-29 (Build on Jesus)

We conclude our meditation on the teachings of Jesus by listening
to him tell us he wants far more than holy words to characterize
our lives. He challenges us to build on the cornerstone he laid by
acting lovingly through the day, each day.

- 'Love God, and do as you please," Augustine wrote. Do you agree
with this statement? Why? Why not?

- What are people missing who do not build their lives on Christ?
How is this costly for them?

- Pray for the grace to believe more deeply in Jesus.

PRAYING WITH SCRIPTURE (Carmelite Method)

A. Introduction: settling in, relaxing in awareness of God's
presence.

B. Reading the text slowly, prayerfully.

C. Meditation: imaginative representation of the material; reflection
on the meaning of the material and its application to one's life.

D. Affective prayer: conversation with God, attentive to sharing
feelings awakened in meditation. Prayer of petition, thanksgiving,
remorse.

E. Resting in God in silent loving awareness, if moved to do so.

NOTES FROM A CLASSICAL WORK
- "Imitation of Christ," by Thomas A. Kempis

The Voice of Christ

What you do, do well. Work faithfully in My vineyard. I will be
your
reward. Write, read, sing, mourn, keep silence, pray, and bear
hardships like a man. Eternal life is worth all these and greater
battles. Peace will come on a day which is known to the Lord,
and then
there shall be no day or night as at present but perpetual light,
infinite brightness, lasting peace, and safe repose. Then you
will not
say: "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" nor
will you
cry: "Woe is me, because my sojourn is prolonged." For then
death will
be banished, and there will be health unfailing. There will be no
anxiety then, but blessed joy and sweet, noble companionship.
