R. (cf. 30) Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the
earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
How manifold are your works, O Lord!
the earth is full of your creatures;
May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD be glad in his works!
Pleasing to him be my theme;
I will be glad in the LORD.
If you take away their breath, they perish
and return to their dust.
When you send forth your spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
Conviction
The work of the Holy Spirit where a person is able to see himself
as God sees him: guilty, defiled, and totally unable to save
himself (John 16:8). Conviction of the Holy Spirit of an unbeliever
reveals sinfulness and guilt and brings fear. Conviction of the
Holy Spirit of the believer brings an awareness of sin and results
in confession and cleansing. This conviction is produced by the
Holy Spirit (John 16:8), the Gospel (Acts 2:37), the conscience
(Rom. 2:15), and the Law (James 2:9). Conviction of our sins brings
us to the cross. It shows us our need for forgiveness.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- June 4th. St. Petroc.
The abbot Petroc is probably Cornwall's best-known saint. He was a
native of South Wales, and lived in the 6th. century. He arrived in
Cornwall at Hayle and founded a monastery at a spot later called
Petroc's Stow, i.e. Padstow, on the north coast. A further
foundation followed at Little Petherick, not far away, as well as
smaller hermitages. Petroc took to living as a hermit on the wilds
of Bodmin Moor; he is not the only Celtic saint to have had a
particular ability to tame wild animals, and his emblem is a stag,
in commemoration of one which he protected from huntsmen. The cult
of St. Petroc became widespread in Devon and Cornwall, in South
Wales and in Brittany, even becoming recognised in Italy. His
relics became the object of an undignified push-me-pull-you between
Cornwall and Brittany: initially at Bodmin, they were secreted out
of the country in 1177 and it required the intervention of King
Henry II to get them returned. In reparation, William, Bishop of
Coutances, presented to the Cornish people a fine ivory reliquary:
it was hidden at the Reformation, rediscovered in the 19th century,
and survives, a remarkable example of medieval art, in Bodmin church.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Celebrating the Holy Eucharist," by Francis Cardinal Arinze.
Ignatius Press, 2006.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1586171585/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
The Cardinal from Africa makes clear that the Church's faith in the
Eucharist is the high point of public worship and the source and
summit of Christian life. "The Eucharistic celebration occupies a
central place in the prayer life of the Church and, therefore, of
every member of the Church." Arinze, in writing this book,
responded to the requests of friends to prepare these reflections
on the Eucharistic mystery.
Some of the chapter headings are: The Holy Eucharist Unites Heaven
and Earth, Reverence Due to the Holy Eucharist, Liturgical Roles in
the Eucharistic Celebration, Active Participation, Liturgical
Norms, and Worship of the Holy Eucharist outside Mass.
Arinze reminds his readers that the priest is ordained first and
foremost to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass and other
liturgical rites. The laity find in the Mass the fount and apex of
their works and actions. Arinze shows how the Mass sends the
faithful out into the world to spread the Gospel. The last
forty-year changes in the Mass and other liturgical rites are also
discussed, along with the responsibilities of the diocesan Bishop,
the priest, and the laity relative to the celebration of sacred
mysteries.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- A minister in Florida lamented that it was difficult to get his
message across to his local congregation:
"It's so beautiful here in the winter," he said, "that heaven
doesn't interest them that much."
"And it's so hot here in the summer that hell doesn't really scare
them either."
(Kind of sounds like Kansas, too.)
