R. (cf. 2b) The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.

The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.

Christianity shapes and is shaped by the worldview of the various
cultures in which it is to be found .It is good to understand these
worldviews, and their formative influences. Nevertheless, the
Gospel is not to be identified with any particular culture or
system; it ultimately transcends these. Join us to explore how the
Spirit is calling us forth as a people during these times of
transition.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

Conditional immortality

The view that immortality is given only to those Christians who
believe in Christ. The rest are destroyed and do not exist. Some
adherents to conditional immortality believe that the wicked will
be punished in hell for a period proportional to their sins and
then they are annihilated.

(Note: this is not what Catholics and most mainline Protestant
Christians believe.)

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Out of the Depths: The story of Ludmila Javorova, ordained Roman
Catholic priest," by Miriam Therese Winter. Crossroad, 2001.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0824518896/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

While communism was in full force in Eastern Europe, a generous and
bold lady called Ludmila Javorova was asked to serve the oppressed
Catholics as an ordained a Roman Catholic priest. This was
dangerous business and carried with it the risk of being disowned
by Roman authorities, her family and friends, as well as by her
communistic country folk.

On what authority was she ordained? A bishop in good standing with
the Church, Bishop Felix Maria Davidek, had begun teaching a group
of seminarians (men and women) in an underground seminary. Knowing
that there were many needs among his Catholic flock that he alone
could not take care of, he asked Ludmila to assist him in his
ministry. Eventually he asked her if she wanted to be ordained. The
Pope had previously told the bishop that he should do whatever was
needed to fill the spiritual needs of the people. Bishop Davidek
ordained several married men and a few women, among them Ludmila.

Her priesthood involved her in many and humiliating incidents; for
one, she had to tell no one that she had been ordained, not even
her father and her brother who were also ordained. Those who knew,
often abused her and offered insults. Through it all, Ludmila "grew
in virtue and in grace," offering Mass alone and under duress. She
often listened to the pain suffered by those who had no confessors,
and yet she could not openly give them absolution. Ludmila became a
prophet for the Catholic Church and proved that ministering to the
people of God could be done by women in ways that men could not
imitate.

This book shows the portrait of a bishop with courage who ordained
Ludmila despite opposition from the faint of heart. It gives the
story of a brave selfless woman who grew in the gifts of the Spirit
silently and courageously. This story ends with an edict from Rome
after communism fell in the Czech Church that Ludmila had to end
her priestly activities. She obeyed.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

Angels and Demons, movie review
- http://movies.nytimes.com/2009/05/15/movies/15ange.html

This one isn't creating as much buzz as "The Da Vinci Code," most
likely because the author (Dan Brown) of the novel upon which the
film is based doesn't blur the lines between fact and fiction quite
so much, nor insist that the latter is the former quite so
emphastically. I haven't seen it, but don't expect to have to do
counseling and workshops to address the kinds of issues raised in
"Code." It just might be a fun, quasi-religious action adventure.
After all, isn't everything Tom Hanks stars in good? (Err . . .
well . . . not necessarily . . .)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- King's birthday

Many years ago, in the south pacific, there was a small island
kingdom that was ruled by a kind and benevolent King. Each year, on
the King's birthday, the residents of the island gave the King a
new throne as token of their love and respect for him.

And each year, the King would put last years gift up in the attic
of his small grass house. After many years of ruling the island,
the weight of the large number of birthday presents stored up in
the attic became too heavy and caused the house to collapse down on
the King.

Moral to the story is: He who lives in grass house, shouldn't stow
thrones.

(Bet you saw that coming, didn't you?)

(Bonus!)

A teenager was always asking his father if he could borrow the
family car. Pushed to the limit, the father asked his son why he
thought God had given him two feet.

Without hesitation, the son replied, "That's easy, one for the
clutch and one for the brake and accelator."

(Thanks, Carol!)
