R. (12a) Create a clean heart in me, O God.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

Give me back the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit sustain in me.
I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners shall return to you.

THEOLOGY INSTITUTE 2009
Christianity in the 21st Century: Dynamics of Spiritual
Transformation
Presented by Philip St. Romain, M.S., D. Min., and Kathryn Damiano, Ph.D.
June 12-16, 2009
Heartland Center for Spirituality
Great Bend, KS
$250 - includes registration, room and board
Christianity shapes and is shaped by the worldview of the various
cultures in which it is to be found .It is good to understand these
worldviews, and their formative influences. Nevertheless, the
Gospel is not to be identified with any particular culture or
system; it ultimately transcends these. Join us to explore how the
Spirit is calling us forth as a people during these times of
transition.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

Cherub/Cherubim

A type of angel usually involved in sacred work before God. They
are generally described as winged creatures with feet and hands.
The word(s) occurs over 90 times in the Old Testament and once in
the New Testament at Heb. 9:5, "And above it were the cherubim of
glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot
now speak in detail." Apparently, there are different kinds of
Cherubim. Two golden Cherubim are on the Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:18).
They were put in Eden "to guard the way of the tree of life," (Gen.
3:24). An interested description of them is given in Ezek.
1:5-11,13,14.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Martin de Porres: A Saint of the Americas," by Brian J. Pierce OP.
Liguori 2004.

As a seventeen year old foreign exchange student, Pierce found
himself in the land of Martin de Porres in Peru. There he witnessed
the violence of poverty and oppression for the first time in his
life. " I knew I would never be the same." Eight years later as a
theological student, the Dominicans of the Southern Province in
America (the Province of Saint Martin de Porres) sent him to Peru.
There he lived

in a community next door to the small room where Martin was born.
He shared meals in the Priory of Santo Dominigo where Martin lived
out his 45 years of Dominican life. " I have spent many hours
snooping around and praying in many of Martin's secret hideouts."
Most of Pierce's ministry has been in Latin America and "it is the
poor of Latin America who have evangelized my heart and taught my
soul to trust in God."

Steeped in Martin's life from his teen years, who would better
write the book on Saint Martin de Porres for the "15 Days of Prayer
series" than Pierce? He tells Martin's story for adults even as he
is saddened that there are only children's books on the saint. He
gives Martin's life history, shares how Martin influences his daily
life, and ends each chapter with reflective questions. "Martin is
much alive today, as he continues to heal the sick and sets free
the brokenhearted. In him, we glimpse the face of God."

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Powerful prayer candles!

Mrs. O'Donovan was walking down O'Connell Street in Dublin, and
coming in the opposite direction was Father O'Rafferty.

"Hello," said the Father, "And how is Mrs. O'Donovan, didn't I
marry you two years ago?"

"You did that, Father."

"And are there any little ones yet?"

"No, not yet, Father." Said she.

"Well now, I'm going to Rome next week, and I'll light a candle for
you."

"Thank-you, Father." And away she went.

A few years later they met again.

"Well now, Mrs. O'Donovan," said the Father, "how are you?"

"Oh, very well," said she.

"And tell me," he said, "have you any little ones yet?"

"Oh yes, Father. I've had three sets of twins, and four singles -
ten in all."

"Now isn't that wonderful," he said "And how is your lovely husband?"

"Oh," she said, "he's over in Rome to blow that bloody \candle out!"
