WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Heb 11:1-7; Ps 145:2-3, 4-5, 10-11; Mk 9:2-13
Sunday: Is 43:18-19, 21-22, 24b-25; Ps 41:2-3, 4-5, 13-14;
2 Cor 1:18-22; Mk 2:1-12
R. (5b) Lord, heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.
Blessed is the one who has regard for the lowly and the poor;
in the day of misfortune the LORD will deliver him.
The LORD will keep and preserve him;
and make him blessed on earth,
and not give him over to the will of his enemies.
The LORD will help him on his sickbed,
he will take away all his ailment when he is ill.
Once I said, "O LORD, have pity on me;
heal me, though I have sinned against you."
But because of my integrity you sustain me
and let me stand before you forever.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
from all eternity. Amen. Amen.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
The Assumption of Mary
In Catholicism, the taking of the body and soul of Mary, by God,
into glory. Catholic doctrine, apparently, does not state whether
or not Mary died, but tradition holds that she died and was
immediately afterward assumed into heaven both body and soul.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Peace Behind Bars: A Peacemaking Priest's Journal From Jail," by
John Dear SJ. Sheed and Ward, 1995.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556127715/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
John Dear gives his daily reflections during the time he was
incarcerated in various jails for invading the Seymour Johnson
Force Air base on Dec. 7, 1993. Along with 70 year old activist
Phil Berrigan, 30 year old homeless advocate Lynn Fredriksson, and
24 year old Catholic Worker Bruce Friedrich, Dear walked through
the woods, onto the tarmac to one of the enormous F15E nuclear
fighter bomber aircraft to hammer its sides to fulfill Isaiah's
mandate to "beat swords into plowshares" and Jesus' command, "Love
your enemies." They were quickly arrested and sent to various jails
for the next eight months.
In this journal/turned book, Dear gives glimpses of prisoners and
of county jails, but more importantly he reveals the life and soul
of a committed Christian peacemaker. He tells of his up and his
down days, days when he felt forgotten even by God, days when he
was on a high in love with his God.
Dear concludes his book with the primary lessons his jail
experience taught him.
1. Jail is awful.
2. Nonviolence is crucial if you want to survive in jail.
3. The Bible and the Eucharist can sustain us through anything.
4. Community is essential.
5. Christ is present among the imprisoned poor.
6. Go and visit the imprisoned.
7. Jailers are human, too.
8. Contemplative prayer is a basic requirement.
9. Hope is granted in daily doses to those who hope for it.
10. Disarmament is still a priority.
11. We can live the Gospel in our daily lives: the choice is ours.
12. Social change comes about through our sharing in the Paschal
Mystery of Jesus.
"In jail, such lessons come hard, but over time their wisdom is
understood as a great grace."

JOKE OF THE WEEK
You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too
old to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For
those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please
read on...
If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous
sketch, "Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:
COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm
thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write
proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO : OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say
I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I
need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with
some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have
anything I can track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COS TELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!
(A few days later)
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on "START".............
(Thanks, June!)
