WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6; Mk
6:30-34
Sunday: Jb 7:1-4, 6-7; Ps 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6; 1 Cor 9:16-19,
22-23; Mk 1:29-39

R. (cf. 3a) Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

Praise the LORD, for he is good;
sing praise to our God, for he is gracious;
it is fitting to praise him.
The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem;
the dispersed of Israel he gathers.

He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He tells the number of the stars;
he calls each by name.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
to his wisdom there is no limit.
The LORD sustains the lowly;
the wicked he casts to the ground.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

Apollinarianism

Apollinarianism was the heresy taught by Apollinaris the Younger,
bishop of Laodicea in Syria about 361. He taught that the Logos of
God, which became the divine nature of Christ, took the place of
the rational human soul of Jesus and that the body of Christ was a
glorified form of human nature. In other words, though Jesus was a
man, He did not have a human mind but that the mind of Christ was
solely divine.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"A Persistent Peace: One man's struggle for a non-violent world,"
by John Dear SJ. Loyola Press, 2008.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0829427201/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

After the introduction by Dear's friend Martin Sheen, Dear proceeds
to give his life story in the pursuit of peace, his successes and
his failures amid his ever present determination to make the world
a peaceful and loving place to be.

Dear was born on Aug. 13, 1959 in North Carolina, not far from
where the Wright brothers sent up their first plane. His childhood
was happy with generous parents, three brothers, a brown pony named
Lucky, a big white house with a long wide lawn and spectacular
beaches nearby. He found wonder and beauty and a new adventure
every day.

After the death of an uncle, the family moved to Bethsada,
Maryland, where he became a news junkie. There was the news of the
Vietnam war, the death of Martin Luther King Jr, and the death of
Robert Kennedy; all these made a great impact on the young John
Dear. He attended parochial schools and later entered Duke
University in North Carolina. Dear dreamed of becoming a rock star
and gave that up after an unusual God-given sign as he meditated on
the Beatitudes while he was camping near the sea of Galilee. He
determined to become a Jesuit priest, following the three customary
vows but adding a private vow with a few friends, a vow of
non-violence.

"All of us say we want peace, but only a few are willing to prove
it." His desire for peace resulted in his arrest more than 75
times, and at least a year spent in jails. He was mocked by the
angry U.S. National Guard battalion standing out side the doors
cabin at his New Mexico parish. All this because he so fervently
believes in peace.

Dear invites his readers to follow his decades-long journey and
spiritual growth as he works to become a peace activist. He invites
his readers to witness his bold, decisive and often unpopular
actions before government offiCials, military officials, and even
representatives of the Jesuits and the Church. Dear's prayer life
sustained him in the hard times, the times when he was abused and
persecuted, even when his religious superiors had misgivings about
the rightness of his actions, his life style, his ways of being
non-violent. Through it all, Dear remained faithful to his life of
prayer and believed that he was truly following the persecuted
Jesus whose followers also thought His way foolishness and
unnecessary.

Dear's story will touch the hearts of all who believe in the power
of peace and the possibility of a world where LOVE conquers all.
Dear knows that peace making is not a part time job and he gives
his every moment for the cause of the crucified Jesus. His life
makes John Dear one of the great spiritual progressive leaders of
our day, a man whose life of wisdom, courage, and gentleness makes
him a great teacher of non-violence and the way of LOVE.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old
son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore,
where a seagull lay dead in the sand.

"Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked.

"He died and went to Heaven," the dad replied.

The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back
down?"

A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend and
was jokingly explaining about the red, white and blue in the
Netherlands flag.

"Our flag symbolizes our taxes," he said. "We get red when we talk
about them, white when we get our tax bill, and blue after we pay
them."

"That's the same with us," the American said, "only we see stars,
too."
