Perfection does not consist in the knowledge of God’s order, but in submission to it. The order of God, the good pleasure of God, the will of God, the action of God, grace—all these are one and the same thing in this life… Perfection is nothing else than the faithful cooperation of the soul with the work of God. This ultimate purpose of our life grows and increases in our souls secretly and without our knowledge.

MT 9:14-15

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
"Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?"
Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast."

Matthew 9: 14-15:  Jesus the bridegroom

Jesus viewed his coming as a time of grace, and he believed that this ought to be celebrated.  Many times he likened God’s kingdom to a wedding feast, where people rejoiced and had fun.  The day would come, however, when fasting would be appropriate.  That time is now.

• Read Isaiah 58: 1-9—today’s first reading—for a better understanding of the kind of fast that God desires.  How can you better exemplify this spirit of fasting in your lifestyle?

• Pray for the grace to hunger for the things of God.

God and I: Exploring the Connections between God, Self and Ego, by Philip St. Romain, 2016 (2nd ed.)
____________

Chapter 6: The Journey to Individuation: The Ego-Self Relationship

Other Approaches to Individuation

We should mention, here, that there are other ways of facilitating individuation. We briefly touched on dreamwork, which was a method used by Jung to support integration between the Ego and the unconscious. Another method that comes from his psychological approach is to work with psychological types. Using an inventory like the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator, one learns whether one is more introverted or extraverted, intuitive or sensate, feeling or thinking. The Ego will usually prefer one of these opposing tendencies over the other, whose potential is therefore considered to be more unconscious. By opening oneself to the opposite function or attitude and learning to integrate it, one is consequently establishing a deeper relationship between the Ego and the unconscious. Strong thinking types like myself who learn to incorporate the affective considerations of feelers in making decisions would be an example, here. In many ways, this is an easier method to learn than dreamwork, and it also yields helpful self-knowledge and explains common relationship dynamics.
