Resource of the Week

At the Edge of Our Longing: Unspoken Hunger for Sacredness and Depth, by James Conlon. Novalis, 2004.

This is a "big picture spirituality" for one's loves and longings, one's prayer and one's politics where one can find God who is good. This is a book which can help people incorporate spirituality into everyday lives, and see God's self-manifestation in all of creation, especially in times of confusion and anxiety.

The four main chapters center on these longings: of soul, of life, or earth, and of the divine. "In our longing for sacredness and depth we explore and experience
a) soul, in those contemplative moments that touch the heart and prompt us to change and grow,
b) life, through opportunities to transcend anxiety and become liberated from everyday confusion,
c) earth in communion with creation as the source and sign of ecological harmony, balance, and peace,
d) divine as the vulnerable and receptive one, calling us into relationship and into the experience of contemplation, liberation and creation, inviting us to belong and instilling in us the courage to confront the challenge of the day."

The appendix provides a guide for discussion and group interaction on the 4 longings with questions for developing a specific spiritual practice.

Saint of the Week

St. Januarius: d. 300. September 19.

Little is known about the life of Januarius. He is believed to have been martyred in the Emperor Diocletian’s persecution of 305. Legend has it that Januarius and his companions were thrown to the bears in the amphitheater of Pozzuoli, but the animals failed to attack them. They were then beheaded, and Januarius’ blood ultimately brought to Naples.

“A dark mass that half fills a hermetically sealed four-inch glass container, and is preserved in a double reliquary in the Naples cathedral as the blood of St. Januarius, liquefies 18 times during the year…Various experiments have been applied, but the phenomenon eludes natural explanation….” [From the Catholic Encyclopedia]
