Book Review of the Week

Abide: Keeping Vigil With the Word of God, by Macrina Wiederkehr. Liturgical Press, 2011.

Macrina urges you to turn the work of God over in your heart as a plough turns over the turf to welcome the seed. She urges her readers to let Scripture lead one into a deeper relationship with God. “Breathe in the Word, wait before the Word, walk through the pages of Scripture as a Pigrim, abide in communion with God."

This book can be used for personal prayer and reflection as well as group sharing. Writing and retreat ministry are part of Macrina’s  daily work for the church and her community in a Benedictine monastery in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This is a book that can be picked up for a short or a longer period of time.

The five chapters in this book are divided thus:

a) Drawn like a magnet to the divine: Desire for God, Come to the Water, All I want to know is Christ, Recognizing the beloved, Pouring out your heart in love, Pilgrimage to the heart of God, The prayer of creation, Consecrate them in truth.

b) The deepening places: The tapping of the heart, Clothing yourself with virtues, The comfort of being known by God, When revelation dawns, A space of love, Opening your heart to guidance, Every day is the day of the Lord.

c) The beautiful struggle of daily life: Being loved in the Meanwhiles, Opening your eyes, Hold  all things lightly, Everyone needs a refuge, The power of powerlessness, Called to be holy, What’s enough?, The limp of blessing.

d) Don’t look back: The practice of being ready, If only you listened, Away with your troubled hearts, This tremendous love, A rule of life, Do not fret..it only leads to evil, Before the mountains were born.

e) Return to your original love: United in purpose, Chosen and precious, Called to freedom, A season of forgiveness, How dear you are, Jesus stopped, Somewhere in you lives a child, Little lights along the way.

These divisions allow for shorter or longer periods of prayer and/ or reflection.

Saint of the Week

St. Athanasius: (296-373). May 2.

Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an outspoken critic of a new movement growing in the East—Arianism.

When Athanasius assumed his role as bishop of Alexandria, he continued the fight against Arianism. At first, it seemed that the battle would be easily won and that Arianism would be condemned. Such, however, did not prove to be the case. The Council of Tyre was called and for several reasons that are still unclear, the Emperor Constantine exiled Athanasius to northern Gaul. This was to be the first in a series of travels and exiles reminiscent of the life of Saint Paul.

After Constantine died, his son restored Athanasius as bishop. This lasted only a year, however, for he was deposed once again by a coalition of Arian bishops. Athanasius took his case to Rome, and Pope Julius I called a synod to review the case and other related matters.

Five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity. During one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peace—reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal to which he was greatly devoted. His dogmatic and historical writings are almost all polemic, directed against every aspect of Arianism.

Among his ascetical writings, his Life of St. Anthony achieved astonishing popularity and contributed greatly to the establishment of monastic life throughout the Western Christian world.
