No indulgence of passion destroys the spiritual nature so much as respectable selfishness.

(How would you distinguish this from a healthy self-love?)

2 TM 1:1-8;   PS 96:1-2A, 2B-3, 7-8A, 10

MK 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,
"Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket
or under a bed,
and not to be placed on a lampstand?
For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.
Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear."
He also told them, "Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,
and still more will be given to you.
To the one who has, more will be given;
from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Mark 4: 21-25 (Nothing is hidden from God)

Truth and love cannot be forever suppressed, Jesus tells us.  Like light shining in darkness, the works of a disciple of Jesus will not remain hidden.  It is precisely these works which will prevent the darkness of sin from completely overtaking the world.

* Emerson wrote, “Be careful of what you want, for you will get it.” What are you really seeking in your everyday involvements? Why?

* Pray for the grace of purity of intention.

God and I: Exploring the Connections between God, Self and Ego, by Philip St. Romain, 2016 (2nd ed.)

Chapter 1: God (excerpts)

   . . . Revelation cannot be proven or disproven by science or philosophy. One must carefully evaluate the evidence, but even here one can only go so far. There are reasons to believe in a personal God, and reasons not to. Also, as with any other relationship, there are risks involved. Suppose one opens oneself to the possibility that God can actually be encountered and seeks to meet God, but nothing happens. Then what?  Suppose something does happen, however? Even more questions!

Fortunately, many men and women through the centuries have taken this leap of faith, and we can learn from their wisdom and experiences. Communities have formed to provide supportive assistance as well. There, we find relationship with other kindred spirits who have also opened themselves to God, and we can journey with them as fellow children of God. It would be odd, indeed, if the God who created us to seek relationship with one another did not also encourage this as part of the life of faith.
